Nicki Minaj has always done things her way but turns loud when she wants to be quiet when it matters. She is never one to observe the rules just because everyone else is doing it. But this time, when she announced she'd be pushing back the release of 'Pink Friday 3,' it wasn't a matter of marketing tactics or music-industry politics; it turned out to be more personal.
During an honest chat with Vogue Italia, the rap queen let the curtains down completely and explained why we're still waiting on her sixth studio album. "I've got a dozen strong songs, she said, and I don't want to rush. I want some meaning behind the album for the fans and me."
Nicki's pause is almost radical in a landscape where everyone's releasing surprise singles and rush-released albums. But She's not here to flood playlists, chasing the algorithm; she wants 'Pink Friday 3' to be an experience, not something to blend into the background.
"I'll never be one of those people that puts out music just for the sake of it. I love music, I respect it," she said. And if anyone has earned the right to take one's time, it's Nicki. Her most recent effort, 'Pink Friday 2,' didn't just go platinum and debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 but also made her the first female rapper to score three No.1 albums in the U.S. Combined with a double-platinum-selling hit like "Super Freaky Girl," the math doesn't lie.
But there is a woman beneath the cross-chart-climbing numbers who's looking back at the expense of her success. "As a woman, I was always afraid of saying I want a child out of fear and not wanting to jinx it," Minaj admitted. "Many women in the industry, especially those older than me, haven't had children. A few don't regret it; others do. I put it off."
And she didn't just postpone motherhood. Thanksgiving dinners, birthday parties, and spending holidays with loved ones were all relegated to the back burner as she hustled to make ends meet for her family. "I think the cost was a normal life."
Nicki's perspective is evolving with her young son, fondly referred to as Papa Bear, by her side. Her heightened profile has not made motherhood any easier; it has made even the most mundane tasks, like taking a walk, more complicated. "It's every day that I have to sort of weigh it: Is it more important that I walk with my son, or is it even a little bit more important that a shot of him not be taken?"
Even as she asked fans to remain patient with her, Nicki hinted that she's craving a meaningful way to reconnect: "Replay it as soon as you can. For me and the Barbz."
So, while we don't quite have a release date for 'Pink Friday 3,' Nicki Minaj isn't showing any sign of slowing down. She's just ensuring that when she eventually drops it, it will be a hit like it is supposed to be, not a moment but a movement.
