In a fraught development for one of music’s most-discussed young couples, DDG, whose birth name is Darryl Dwayne Granberry Jr., has been granted a temporary restraining order against the singer and actress Halle Bailey, citing worries for the safety of their newborn son.
The court decision, which was announced on Wednesday, May 15, follows a growingly hostile custody battle between the two entertainers. DDG alleges that Bailey presents an “immediate threat” to his and their child’s emotional and physical safety. He also sought to prevent Bailey from taking their child out of the country, a motion the court shot down, as it did his request for sole custody.
In court filings, DDG made serious charges against Bailey, accusations of such a forceful and abusive nature and “repeated, documented threats of self-harm.” In one alarming event recounted in the documents, Bailey reportedly took his gun and left the home, threatening to kill herself. At the time, according to DDG, she was “emotionally unwell, incoherent and potentially suicidal.”
Though the court granted a temporary restraining order, it declined to award DDG sole custody or issue travel restrictions until a later hearing.
Bailey, The Little Mermaid star and one-half of the Grammy-nominated duo Chloe x Halle, has countered with similarly grave accusations. She also previously sought her restraining order and sole custody, alleging that DDG was physically and verbally abusive toward her, including allegedly slamming her face into a steering wheel while their child was in the car.
Bailey vehemently denies DDG’s portrayal of her mental state, claiming in court he is “exaggerating and embellishing” past incidents during a period when she was “emotionally destroyed” by his behavior. She called his filing “a cold act of retribution for the purpose of causing humiliation and additional emotional pain.”
Bailey also said DDG’s legal maneuvers had been nothing but untimely, adding that accusations about her parenting only came on the exact day set for a hearing on her domestic abuse claims against him.
Despite contradicting allegations, both sides continue to play blame games. DDG said its attorneys released a statement noting that the temporary restraining order had been granted, although initial media reports said otherwise. “The Court issued Mr. Granberry a Temporary Restraining Order as a result of the disturbing allegations contained in his application,” their statement.
As the legal fight plays out, the safety and welfare of the couple’s young child are at the center of what has become a painful and very public conflict. With more hearings in store, both sides will have future opportunities to make their case, and the court will ultimately decide what is best for their son.
Meanwhile, the world is watching a relationship that was a cause for celebration disintegrate, all in real time behind headlines, legal documents, and broken hearts.
