It all came to a head when DDG's brother, DuB, was recorded bodyslamming one attendee named Lil Jay after the guy reportedly poked the bear once too many times. His jab? A too-cute nickname he lobbed as the group was walking: "Doo Doo Garbage."
It was a joke, according to Lil Jay. "I had heard DDG before, I had heard the name, I heard the term 'Doo Doo Garbage.' "I'm like, it'd be funny," he said later. But things went left fast. In the video, DuB is seen not taking the insult lightly, shoving Lil Jay and then taking him to the ground. Security had stepped in quickly, but the damage was done. Chains broken. Glasses gone. Bans issued. And now? Lawyers might be following.
Lil Jay responded, "I gotta sue him, his brother, somebody out here." "That's unacceptable."
DDG didn't throw his hands himself, but he was recorded on video ordering, "Check him," a phrase he's presenting now as a supposed attempt to take it easy on his sparring partner. "I meant to check if he was all right," he told police later. Not every fan was completely sold.
DDG hopped on Twitter Spaces shortly after, throwing his weight behind DuB and giving his version of things. He claims DuB felt unsafe and said Lil Jay had been following them around the convention for almost three hours, attempting to provoke confrontation and "embarrass us and bully us." True to DDG form, he didn't pussyfoot around, dismissively handling the blowback with snark. "So he lost Sonic rings," he said, as a winking reference to a viral moment when he lost coins, as video game characters do when they are hit.
Interestingly, fans had already been put on notice by DDG ahead of Dream Con not to play with that "Doo Doo Garbage" name. In a pre-convention video, he spelled it out: "If a f#### come on me with some 'Doo Doo Garbage' s###, I'm going to hold that n#### up so g###### bad." And now? He's posting tweets warning that the last person who did so "lost some Mario coins" and calling his critics "poor."
That Dream Con dust-up is underway amid other storm clouds in DDG's life. The rapper also has a restraining order against him from his ex-girlfriend, Halle Bailey, who alleged that he had been abusive.
With threats of legal action, some very public shade, and one hell of a viral body slam, it's safe to say Dream Con was nothing short of a nightmare for DDG. But if you ask him, he's standing up for family and being the voice of reason in the madness.
