Jermaine Dupri has now ushered in the artists of DVSN as the initial signing on his newly resurrected So So Def Recordings, the latest iteration powered by a heavyweight global partnership between the Atlanta-based media mogul and HYBE America. It's a fresh start for the R&B duo and maybe a bigger one for Dupri's iconic label.
DVSN, consisting of the singer Daniel Daley and the producer Nineteen85, is ushering in this new chapter with a multi-album deal that unifies So So Def's soul-inflected heritage with HYBE's premier distribution apparatus. Dupri, the workaholic music industry vet, will direct the duo's creative direction, but HYBE plans to help these two find a global audience for their sound.
The announcement smacks less of a business deal and more of a reunion between kindred souls. "After producing the group's last album and attending their shows and meeting all their fans, just hearing all of their fans' stories finally reached a point when they were literally able to be free agents and the first stop was here, signing them," Dupri said. "I immediately had to have DVSN be my first signing at So So Def/HYBE."
The wait is over for DVSN fans hoping to learn how they plan to follow up their acclaimed debut. The two announced Instagram Stories, sharing, "4 everyone speculating whether or not we broke up and where the new music is, here's your answer." They also posted a quote from Dupri that pretty much sums up the energy of now: "He said, 'Just do what Y'ALL do and let me help shine a light on it.'"
DVSN has come a long way here. From there and throughout their tenure on Drake's OVO Sound and Warner Records, the duo have carved a niche in contemporary R&B, supplying albums like 'Sept. 5th, Morning After, A Muse In Her Feelings, and Working On My Karma.' With every release, they proved their moody, sultry sound and storytelling game, cultivating a cult following and critical acclaim.
Now, armed with the firepower of So So Def's legacy and HYBE's international infrastructure, DVSN is set to transcend its artistry to new heights. They're due to release their first single on the new label this year, and expectations are high.
It's a signal that the sleeping giant So So Def is being awakened as a significant creative force, with HYBE amplifying DVSN's voice and some future wave of artists mixing soul, innovation, and a global touch.
For Jermaine Dupri, it's not simply resurrecting a label; it's curating a movement. And for DVSN, it's the start of a new chapter: more light, reach, and, most importantly, music.
