Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson isn’t just a hip-hop star and shrewd entrepreneur, but he’s also no stranger to the courthouse. Now, he’s once again making legal headlines with a brazen maneuver: getting a federal bankruptcy court to intervene and halt a $20 million lawsuit filed by a woman whose claim, he maintains, should have died and been buried years ago.
Here’s the backstory. In 2015, 50 Cent famously filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, a move that surprised fans but ultimately enabled the rapper to restructure his finances and emerge stronger than ever. By 2017, the court had approved his reorganization plan, eliminating a raft of pre-bankruptcy debts and clearing the way for Jackson to continue building his empire.

Rodriguez, who says he has a personal injury claim against 50, filed a Feb. 28 lawsuit — more than eight years after the deadline for any creditor to make a filing in the bankruptcy case. Her legal action is “based on prepetition conduct,” according to court documents, which means it is connected to events that she says transpired before the rapper filed for bankruptcy. In other words, old news.
50’s lawyers are crying foul. They contend that Rodriguez’s claim was wiped away with his other debts back in 2017. Despite being informed that her lawsuit was baseless, Rodriguez insists the charges are legit.
These even went up to a mediation session on May 13, but the dispute wasn’t resolved. Now, 50 is playing hardball. Now, through his lawyer, John L. Cesaroni, the rapper is asking the bankruptcy court to reopen his old case — not to re-litigate the past, but to enforce the existing discharge order in his bankruptcy case.
“For the avoidance of doubt,” Cesaroni wrote, “Jackson denies Rodriguez’s allegations, to the extent that such vague allegations can be comprehended, which is to say not at all.
The rapper isn’t stopping there. He’s also asking the court to impose sanctions on Rodriguez for flouting the court’s earlier decisions and to allow him to file sensitive materials about the case under seal.
His legal team has argued that he has already spent a substantial amount of money fighting the lawsuit and wants the court to expedite the proceedings to prevent further financial hardship. Given his track record of making comebacks from setbacks, 50 is not about to let this one die.
A date for his day in court hasn’t been scheduled yet, but one thing is for sure: 50 Cent isn’t going down without a fight. In classic Fif fashion, he’s doing more than fighting for his pockets; he’s fighting for his name.
