Rapper Skilla Baby was shot in what police describe as a targeted drive-by. The shooting occurred on Eight Mile Road near Beech Daly, an area known as much for its gritty history as it is for producing legends. The confusion erupted when a black SUV, pockmarked with bullet holes, slammed into the side of a business, Fox 2 Detroit reported. The sidewalk was strewn with shell casings, a sad reminder of the storm of bullets that had just raged through.
Sitting inside that SUV was 25-year-old Trevon Gardner, who has become widely known as Skilla Baby. One of the fastest-rising voices in Detroit hip-hop, Skilla Baby, sustained multiple injuries: a graze wound to the back of the head, one to the back, a gunshot wound to the hand, and, according to some reports, further injuries to the legs. Somehow, he managed to survive and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Skilla Baby is currently stable and awake with loved ones. The rapper is being kept under tight security, according to sources close to him, as police pursue their investigation.
Police in Redford Township are describing the shooting as a “targeted shooting,” but they do not have any suspects in custody. The motive is not known, but the sheer amount of gunfire and the specific target confirm this was no random act of violence.
Support has poured in on social media from fans and fellow artists for a rapper whose voice has been resounding more loudly in recent months in Detroit and beyond.
Skilla Baby has been on a sharp ascent in the rap world, building local street cred and national attention with his raw storytelling and pointed delivery. He said in a recent interview that hip-hop entrepreneur 50 Cent had taken to mentoring him and guided him through television, film, and music.
It’s a bitter irony that just as Skilla Baby was venturing into new territory, proving to the world there’s more to him than just bars and beats, he was a victim of senseless violence.
And yet, that he survived such a savage attack in and of itself says something not just about his strength but about the spirit that has brought him this far. In a city of grit and gifts, Skilla Baby is plenty of both.
As this tale unfolds, Skilla Baby’s story is not ending; it’s beginning something new. And Detroit, scarred and struggling as it is, still knows how to raise a street fighter.
