T.I. has never been one to let a moment pass, be it on the mic, in the headlines, or at home. And this Father’s Day, the self-styled King of the South donned a new crown: prank king. In the clip, T.I. delivered a comical power move to his son, King Harris, with a straight face and camera rolling to celebrate his very first Father’s Day.
In a video King later posted on social media, the Atlanta rap icon, 43, warmly greeted King with a “Happy Father’s Day” before swiftly assuming his rightful place as dad-jokester-in-chief. The comedian who gave us “The Jerk” and “Roxanne” then launched into a master class on comedic delivery, all under the cover of a family “tradition” that no one, not even especially King, had ever heard of.
“It’s your first Father’s Day,” T.I. began, turning into the wise elder about to bless someone’s life with a gem. “So I got to tell you about the tradition. King listened intently until things took a wild left turn.
“You got to climb the tallest tree and grab the weakest branch,” T.I. proclaimed. King’s face spoke volumes, a perfect balance of bewilderment. Is he kidding? But the older Harris didn’t give up.
“And then you get pushed in the pool,” he added, attempting and mostly failing to maintain a straight face. “But you got to do it before sundown; your son will watch you do it.”
In the manner of a true dad, T.I. wasn’t done there. He mentioned bringing in reserves, which in this case would be his firstborn son, Messiah Harris, who also has a first baby on the way later this year.
“Messiah ‘bout to come on and do it too. It’s y’all first Father’s Day,” T.I. added, walking away with a grin. “I’m going to pick you out a good tree,” he called back to King before guffawing in the camera’s direction.
It was classic T.I. sharp-witted and comically deadpan, flavored with Southern family charm. Also, a less-than-subtle reminder that prank or no prank, in the Harris household, Father’s Day isn’t about gifts or grills but about connections, comedy, and handing down something real or at least comic gold.
Proud father to seven, grandfather to three, and a fourth on the way, T.I. still plays an actively influential role in the lives of his blended family with his wife, Tiny Harris. From raising his youngest, 3-year-old Heiress, to welcoming new generations of offspring in children like 23-year-old Zonnique, 19-year-old Domani, and now 4-year-old King, he’s making the most out of every stage of fatherhood even the part where you create wild traditions to watch your kids squirm every year.
