And in the latest instalment of Nelly and Ashanti: "We Belong Together," the R&B superstar brought us up close and personal to a very real, very relatable parenting moment: calling out Nelly for dozing through the cries of their baby boy. At the same time, she handled her own business.
The couple is now navigating the beautiful chaos of new parenthood after the birth of their son, Kareem Kenkaide Haynes, in July 2023. But as Ashanti explained, the nighttime grind isn't a requirement for everyone under the roof.

"It's just with the baby, it's like, a lot," Ashanti continued, telling Nelly during a heart-to-heart while sounding equal parts tired and amused. "How do you sleep through when he starts to cry?"
Nelly, always the easygoing half of the pair, didn't deny it. "Do y'all really be up at night? I'd heard about it," he said, sounding almost like he was discussing Bigfoot sightings and not wake-up calls every night.
Here's the truth of the matter: the quote's hilarious, but if you've ever been that person who's walking the floor at 3 am because your partner could sleep through a tornado, you know Ashanti's raised eyebrow was well-earned.
Ever since Kareem, Ashanti has been keeping the home fires burning as Nelly tours the world for his "Where The Party At" tour, which began in March. Having a joint tour that crosses continents means that Ashanti has to juggle lullabies and late nights without her partner-in-crime in tow. So, when he comes back and sleeps through the baby monitor's call?
Nelly later reaffirmed his hands-off approach, at least for now. "'Cause once he gets to walking and talking, he's with the crew," he said, meaning that once little Kareem is mobile, dad duty is on.
It's classic Nelly, endearing, a bit of a tease, and self-assured. But Ashanti's face said it all: Baby Kareem's cries don't have a snooze button, and mama's been up for every note of the nightly symphony.
As Kareem approaches his first birthday on July 18, there are big things on the horizon and significant milestones in the rearview. Whether or not Nelly's late-night parenting act improves, Ashanti is not too shy to keep it real, even when the cameras are on her.
Each parent group makes it work in their way, and if Ashanti is working the night shift while Nelly handles the mic, hey, at least someone's in balance.
