Beyoncé and JAY-Z Go Head-to-Head in 2025 Emmy Battle

Music's Royal Couple, Beyoncé and JAY-Z, are duking it out for Emmy gold this year, and fans are already pledging their allegiance with love, of course. Both heavyweights are nominated in the Outstanding Variety Special Live category at the 2025 Emmy Awards, and this time, it's not a team-up project; it's a down-and-dirty Carter vs. Carter tussle.

Queen Bey's electrifying Beyoncé Bowl halftime show, which Netflix broadcast during the N.F.L.'s star-studded Christmas Day game, won her the most recent nod from the Television Academy. Already the proud owner of 32 Grammy Awards, The Power of Queen Bey shows no sign of slowing down, and not only rules the world of music but is finding her way into the TV industry with her unmatched excellence. The halftime show was an all-out spectacle, mixing her powerhouse vocals with jaw-dropping visuals and the sort of energy only a force like Beyoncé could use to hold sway.

Not to be outdone, JAY-Z, born Shawn Carter, is also in the running, though in this case from the producer's seat. He earned a nomination as executive producer of Kendrick Lamar's Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show, which was positioned in its own right as a cultural moment. JAY-Z has exerted far more influence behind the scenes in recent years, and this isn't his first time in this particular Emmy lane. He also already took home this very award in 2022 for his performance in the epic Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show, a cavalcade of Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, 50 Cent, and, yes, Kendrick again.

So, for all that the category is designated a "variety special," this year it might as well be the "Who Runs the Emmy World?" show.

And of course, it's not the first time the Carters have shared the spotlight. By 2023, Beyoncé had pulled even with JAY-Z as the most-nominated artist in Grammy history, with a mind-boggling 88 nominations apiece. With Beyoncé's genre-defying album, Cowboy Carter, also in her accolade collection, and JAY-Z's behind-the-scenes influence still guiding culture, the message is that they're so much more than artists; they're institutions.

Their love story dates back to the early 2000s when two rising young stars fell in love in their early twenties. They married in 2008, started a family, and somehow found a way to rewrite the rules of contemporary artistry. With three children, Blue Ivy, Rumi, and Sir spectating from the wings, this Emmy showdown is a family affair.

The 2025 Emmy Awards will be broadcast later this year, and regardless of the gold statue's eventual winner between Beyoncé and JAY-Z, the Carters have already won, just in radically different ways.
