In what may be one of the weirdest international dust-ups this year, a right-wing commentator is facing the full legal wrath of a politician and his wife, and it's not another media personality or political pundit but French President Emanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron. The couple submitted a 200-page lawsuit in Delaware on July 23, 2025, claiming Owens has waged a "defamation campaign" replete with outlandish conspiracy theories and scathing personal attacks.
The legal drama stems from outlandish accusations Owens has made publicly on her podcast and social media. Among them: that Ms. Macron was born as a male, robbed the identity of another woman, and transitioned into her present public identity. But the allegations don't stop there. Owens reportedly went one step further, delving into fringe theory that the Macrons are not only simply blood related, but involved in an incestuous relationship, and that a CIA-funded mind control program engineered Emmanuel Macron's political ascension.

The Macrons claim they attempted to keep the matter private, asking Owens to retract her words on numerous occasions. But "because Ms. Owens systematically republished these falsehoods in response to each of our attorneys' multiple entreaties for a retraction, in the final analysis, we felt there was no recourse other than to refer the matter to a court of law."
The lawsuit lists 22 counts against each publication, including defamation, false light, and defamation by implication. The Macrons are suing for damages, including unspecified amounts for reputational harm and financial loss associated with Owens' repeated broadcasting of the theories. These weren't isolated remarks, either. A significant portion of the content was from Owens' podcast series, Becoming Brigitte, and she continues to say hurtful things despite leaving The Daily Wire in March 2024.
As per usual for Candace Owens, the answer has not been subtle. After the lawsuit became public, she also shared a photo of the French couple on Instagram with the caption: "I'll be coming for this wig today. Stay tuned." On X (formerly Twitter), she threw gasoline on the fire, suggesting, "Brigitte pivots from grooming teenagers to an attempt to groom American courts. LETSGO."
Her spokesperson replied to The Guardian with a statement, characterizing the lawsuit as a global overreach. "This is a foreign government attacking the First Amendment of an American independent journalist," the statement said. "In France, politicians can bully journalists, but this isn't France, but It's America."
It's worth mentioning that Brigitte Macron previously won a defamation case related to the same rumors in France in 2023, although that verdict was reversed this month on appeal.
Now, as both sides dig in their heels, Owens with the First Amendment, the Macrons with their last name, this legal donnybrook looks likely to be a test case for the limits of international reputation, press freedom, and just how far "hot takes" can go before courts are asked to step in. Buckle up, America.
