The Massachusetts native Joyner Lucas decided to finally listen to Skepta’s most recent lyrical pounce, “Round 2,” and shared his reaction with fans on Instagram Live. Instead of immediately retaliating, Lucas did something more surprising: he laughed a lot.
The highlight of the stream is Joyner almost lost it when Skepta tried to rhyme “Joyner Lucas” with “loads of mucus.” Halfway through the livestream, he stopped, blinked, and shook his head in disbelief. “Did he just rhyme with ‘loads of mucus,’ ‘What’s with all this dumb s— fluid with all of these nut in it?’ ” he asked, cracking up. The instant soon became a viral sensation for fans, who played his reaction back as a meme-worthy takedown all its own.

Though Joyner shrugged off the diss on the whole, he offered a subtle nod to one bar that managed to sting a little. When Skepta rapped, “You only make hits rapping from another guy’s perspective,” Lucas raised an eyebrow and offered what fans called a “respectful nod.” A little moment of credit in a sea of derision.
But don’t let the smile fool you, Lucas is anything but backing off. Burning off the adrenaline of a three-hour broadcast, he exhaled deeply and issued a dismissive, relaxed: “Okay…” And then, with the kind of wind-up you give yourself as you prepare for round three of an argument, he shared the clip with this accompanying caption:
“You’re just not gonna stop, are you, skippy? It’s up now, my boy. @skepta.”
And if that wasn’t a clear enough shot across the bow, Lucas also doubled down on Instagram Stories, suggesting that his next shot will be one that Skepta doesn’t come back from.
This entire lyrical brawl has been simmering afore even Skepta took his first poke with “Friendly Fire” and referred to Joyner as a “joke” on these shores; Lucas hit back big time with “Nobody Cares” on July 15, where he taunted Skepta about his U.K. chart position and what he described as his “mans nem” connection with Drake.
Well, Skepta’s “Round 2” has only added fuel to the fire, claiming that Lucas had let Chumps Down by losing to Tory Lanez and flexing his triple platinum status. But Lucas seems undeterred, a blend of humor and bravado suggesting that he can’t wait for whatever happens next.
The transatlantic bout of verbal sparring has erupted across social media, with fans from both sides of the Atlantic piling in behind their respective teams. And when Drake spoke out at a recent Wireless Festival, declaring London MCs “the best lyricists in the world,” some of us felt this was a silent co-sign for Skepta. Whether this beef ends in a Sirius-enough lyrical knockout or just more meme-worthy moments, Joyner Lucas ain’t playing nice.
