Kid ‘n Play, Jungle Brothers, DJ Red Alert & More Take Center Stage in D.C.

This August, the sounds and pulse of Hip-Hop history will be felt in Washington, D.C. as the National Hip-Hop Museum prepares for its biggest and most exciting Hall of Fame Induction ceremony yet! “Part of what we’re celebrating? None other than Kid ‘n Play and the Jungle Brothers, two acts that helped define the genre’s golden era with fresh rhymes, funky beats, and unforgettable style.

Scheduled for August 23, 2025, at the Woolly Mammoth Theatre, this year’s edition of the inductions isn’t just a one-and-done event. In classic Hip-Hop style, the festival is going big with an entire week of interactive experiences leading up to the main event. For the first time, the museum is introducing an all-ages, all-vibes welcome experience from August 18 to 22, 2025, which will bring downtown D.C. to life as a thank you to the culture.

Titled “Hip-Hop Happy Hours,” the week will offer DJ battles, breakdancing exhibitions, graffiti art wars, and even cash-prize contests all encased in memories and attitude. Look for such rare artifacts as original stage clothes, vintage posters, and KRS-ONE’s famous “Hip-Hop Declaration of Peace.”

“This isn’t just memories,” adds NHHM founder Jeremy Beaver, “it’s a celebration of the living culture of Hip-Hop that unites people of all generations.”

Added to the Hall of Fame class this year are fellow pioneers DJ Red Alert, Dana Dane, Kwamé, Sweet Tee, and DJ Hollywood, icons who have left their marks on every aspect of Hip-Hop’s rise from park jams to a global phenomenon.

The themed week will include: MC Monday (August 18), A freestyle open mic with a $250 prize.
Turntable Tuesday (August 19): Hip-hop DJs face off for the sickest spin.
Wild Style Wednesday (August 20): Graffiti artists do battle in color and creativity.
B-Boy & B-Girl Thursday (August 21) Breakdancers hit the floor; DJ B Blast has their back.
Grown Folks Friday (August 22) An 18+ dance party and pop-up shop to close out the week in good form.

Daily from noon until 10 pm, the Woolly Mammoth will be a Hip-Hop mecca for the people, with events including a Beat Konductaz Battle hosted by Rapper Big Pooh and Apollo Brown, live painting tributes courtesy of resident artist Kevin “Scene” Lewis, and a custom Hip-Hop cake that will be built on-site.

Then, on Friday, the red carpet is unfurled at 4 pm, followed by a podcast with the legendary Grandmaster Caz, the reading of the Mayor’s Proclamation, and a spiritual blessing from Dr. Ansel “Preach” Augustine.

It’s all backed up by an induction ceremony presided over by Master Gee of The Sugarhill Gang, complete with speeches, fashion shows, hand-carved medallions and the live concert featuring Dana Dane, Kwamé, Jungle Brothers with DJ Red Alert and, of course, a headlined set from Kid ‘n Play just in time for the 35th anniversary of House Party.
