Nick Cannon is not shying away from questions about his famously fertile family; in fact, he's owning up to it with some unexpected candor and comedy.
The 44-year-old took part in a new interview with Vulture this week. It did not hold back when telling them about the year he fathered five kids with five different women, labeling it "reckless activity," and possibly more indicative of his need to please people:
Let's rewind to 2022. In that year alone, Cannon became a father again, welcoming Legend with Bre Tiesi, Onyx with LaNisha Cole, Rise with Brittany Bell, Beautiful with Abby De La Rosa, and Halo with Alyssa Scott. That whirlwind brought his count to 12 kids.
Asked what had inspired his spree of parenting, Cannon shot down the suggestion that he was competing with the famous father of 2020, Elon Musk, whose jaw-dropping kid tally was a topic of discussion. Instead, he provided something far more personal: a glimpse into his emotional trade-offs.
"It arose out of my need to, first, show these women I was doing something, and, second, to satisfy my single friends who were asking for kids," he said. That impulse of people-pleasing, compounded with what he referred to as "careless activity," led to a perfect storm.
He even appeared surprised at the results. "Now listen," he said with laughter. "How in the world did I have five kids in a year?" he pondered aloud during the interview. The response, he concedes, is in part the one he made, but not enough thinking behind it.
But don't confuse his reflection with remorse. Cannon has always been outspoken about his love for his children, and he may not be finished having babies anytime soon.
"There were times at which I was like, 'Nah, I'm done.' And, then I was like, 'Who am I to say that?'" he explained. I never thought that I would ever have 12 kids. So, it's one of those things where I love kids. I love my life."
Now, as Nick Cannon prepares to launch his new podcast, Nick Cannon @ Night, he's set to delve even deeper, exploring relationships, fatherhood, and his journey through love and legacy. The podcast, set to begin in the latter half of this year, will be a place where he can share more with the same candor that he demonstrated during this interview.
Nick Cannon's tale may sound like a tabloid headline, but under the numbers lies a man coming to grips with choices, maturation, and a commitment to his family. Inspiring? Wild? A little of both? Nick Cannon is going about fatherhood his own way, even if it hit him five times quicker than he ever could have anticipated.
