Rap Icon Kanye Defends Shanghai Show Amid Backlash

Kanye West is not one to shy away from controversy, and this time, he’s quite literally providing them. He wasn’t about to let it go at that when reports and social media chatter deemed his July 12, 2025, concert at Shanghai Stadium a “disaster.” Instead of staying silent, he and his team responded with a lengthy statement, squashing rumors and exposing what had happened behind the scenes.

First, we’re going to set the stage, and this wasn’t just any show. It was Kanye’s first full concert in Shanghai since 2008, and a large-scale one at that. An estimated 70,000 to 72,000 fans filled the stadium, making it one of China’s largest hip-hop spectacles to date. Tickets were up, climbing beyond $400, and expectations as well.

But not long after the lights dimmed, complaints began pouring in, with disappointed fans using Chinese social media to bemoan subpar sound quality, lackluster stage production, and a set that fizzled out far too soon. Some even chanted for refunds.

“To set up the performance, Ye tracked into the stadium well before 3:00 P.M.,” his team said, noting that there is video surveillance to prove it. The concert was supposed to start at 7:30, but technical difficulties kept delaying it, eventually pushing the kickoff to 8:00 even though the setup still didn’t look right.

“With all the shit that happened tonight, it would have been So inhumane to take that moment from ash and cut his cameras.“ out of respect for the audience’s time and souls bro“ Ye went to the stage and stood in front of the fifty-foot screen without an ounce of fear like he always does,” the statement reads. In other words, the show must go on, even when the gear is not being friendly.

During the performance, Kanye had to stop it a whopping three times due to technical malfunctions. He retreated offstage to tinker and would immediately return to continue the performance, as rain drenched the stadium.

His team stressed that Kanye “insisted on performing this evening, not to disappoint all his fans who came out to see him and was not about to let anyone figuratively 'kill his show.“

The show closed on a dramatic note. Ye, standing alone in the rain, bowed to the audience before leaving the stage. But just when it looked like the night was over, an unsanctioned track came through the stadium speakers. Kanye’s camp says he had very little involvement in it and was caught entirely off guard.

“Ye was completely blindsided by it and is horrified and sickened and desperately trying to get to the bottom of it right now.”

In classic Kanye form, he ended his statement on a contrarian note, with a bit of humility and hope, if you will: “I love China. I love my Chinese fans. Your encouragement is my biggest inspiration. I vow to even more perfect stages to return all the trust and love you’ve given me!!!!
