Tech N9ne Clears the Air on 'Face Off' Verse

The ever-even-keeled and ever-truthful Tech N9ne came clean about one of the most talked-about rap cameos in quite some time. And no, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson wasn't coasting, either; he arrived with lyrics, fire, and intention.

"He knew exactly what he said he wanted to say." Tech added with a smile." I just helped work it through."

Now, if you were one of the skeptics convinced that The Rock had a ghostwriter secretly bar-feeding him between takes of "Black Adam," Tech is here to put that theory on ice. For him, the Hollywood heavyweight had brought his raw material, and it was 100% his. Tech didn't write him lines, but he helped shape the beast.

"It's about drive, it's about power / We stay hungry, we devour." Those lines became an internet anthem, a gym chant, and a viral moment that garnered more than 88 million YouTube views. Whether you were pumping iron or mindlessly swiping through TikTok, the odds are good you heard The Rock sound off at least once.

Reflecting on the writing session, Tech's face lit up as he recited one of The Rock's lines: "Face-to-face, now it's escalating. I was like, that n###a's dope, man."

And that's high praise from one of the most technically respected MCs in the game. Tech didn't give The Rock a verse; he watched him construct it.

"I probably wouldn't have said 'hours and hours' or some of the stuff he said," Tech confessed, "but he said it was dope and it worked. It made sense."

Even Jigsaw hopped in the convo, shouting out for clarification: "So he co-wrote it." "Yes. Yep," Tech replied, with no hesitation.

And just like that, a pop culture myth is laid to rest. In a rap climate that is all about ghostwritten guest verses and name-brand features phoning it in, The Rock had put in the work. And that makes all the difference.

Of course, Tech is on the go with his latest album, 5816 Forest, a year-by-year deep dive into his teenage years growing up in Kansas City. The project is raw, autobiographical, and as kinetic as what has kept Tech N9ne at the forefront of hip-hop for decades. But for now, we pause to salute the improbable: an action hero who stepped into the rap game not just with the requisite charisma, but with bars.
