The Canadian rapper Tory Lanez will return to court this summer for oral arguments in his appeal on August 18 at 9:00 a.m. in Los Angeles. Lanez is trying to overturn the 10-year sentence he received after being convicted in 2022 for shooting Grammy-winning performer Megan Thee Stallion in the foot following a heated argument that arose at a Hollywood Hills party in 2020.
It has been a flashpoint in pop culture, social media, and even on Capitol Hill. Tory Lanez, who has consistently denied the charges previously, was denied bail, with the court expressing concerns that he might flee, among other legal matters. Even so, his team has continued to push forward, and the rest of the world is now watching on August 18, 2025.

Compounding this seemingly never-ending and messy saga, Florida Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna has now come out to support Lanez. Luna says that new DNA evidence, as well as Ring camera footage, raises doubts about the original conviction. She has brought the justice system into question, claiming it has been swayed by no more than “headlines,” not hard facts.
Based on Luna’s descriptions of that phone call and what she went through with that case, the handling of it seems “largely driven by media pressure.” She’s now trying to rally some Democrats, as well as friends, including Phil Durocher, a Democrat, to ask California Governor Gavin Newsom for a full pardon.
On the other hand, Megan Thee Stallion and her legal team are having none of it. They’ve dismissed all of these allegations as no more than “false and misleading narratives” circulated by Lanez’s supporters. Megan’s lawyers say the evidence presented at his trial was strong, and that the so-called “new” stuff doesn’t change anything at all, but it’s all part of a larger misinformation effort.
Enter Milagro Gramz, a blogger who has shown her support for Lanez, who was just slapped with a $5,000 attorney fee penalty. That decision stemmed from her failure to hand over crucial digital records in Megan’s defamation and cyberstalking lawsuit, which was filed in late 2024. Gramz has been accused, in the suit, of being a paid “mouthpiece” for Lanez. At the same time, the rapper was incarcerated, spreading harmful lies about Megan’s mental health, posting deepfake pornographic material, and amplifying debunked rumors about “missing evidence.”
Her legal problems have mounted, culminating in the loss of her lawyer due to the financial weight of her legal difficulties. As the August court date draws near, this case is far from over. Whether Lanez’s appeal is taken seriously or not, this larger story of justice, celebrity, media influence, and the court of public opinion will be fodder for discussion long after the verdict is in.
