How a Monk Helped Lizzo Find Herself

In a candid cover story for Women’s Health, Lizzo revealed the profound change of perspective she underwent during a serendipitous interaction with a Tibetan monk while she was vacationing on her own in Bali in August 2024. And when she dropped by for a visit with SZA not long after, the “Kill Bill” singer was quick to sense something had changed.

“I remember pulling up by myself to see her,” Lizzo said. “And SZA was like, ‘Are you all right? You’re still always alone, and you never were alone.’”

“I was like, ‘I’m good. I don’t need anybody. I’m here to see you.’ And she said, ‘I love this healed version.’ ”

That “healed version” also didn’t just magically appear overnight. Lizzo has credited a breakthrough coming while she was on a soul-searching retreat in Bali, and there she ran into a monk who imparted the sort of life advice that lodges in your head:

He was like, ‘You care too much about other people. You need to trust yourself. You have to tell yourself, ‘I’m the best one to do this.’ You have to prioritize your ideas and don’t let someone sit there and tell you they know you better than you know yourself,” Lizzo shared. “I spoke to him and I had this clarity, nothing could shake me now.”

It’s a dramatic turnaround for someone who has publicly struggled with self-worth as well as validation from others, and now, she says, learning to wake up with a confidence that is generated from within.

And for her longtime friend and collaborator SZA, it’s a shift worth celebrating. The two artists go way back, like, memories of a 2013 tour bus and spur-of-the-moment trips to Lake Michigan kind of way back.

“We got drunk and kicked it, and we just had to keep kicking it,” SZA said. “Then our lives and careers progressed, and we continued to hang out and talk.”

And their friendship has evolved the way their music has. The pair previously teamed up on a remix of Lizzo’s 2022 song “Special”, and SZA recently hinted that there could be a little more musical magic coming from the two.

No matter how often fans wish to ceremoniously pair them up for a hit, this more profound emotional sync between the powerhouse singers could be their truest collaboration yet.

From touring in vans to spiraling in Bali, Lizzo’s story is proof that healing doesn’t always have to be loud; sometimes it just begins with listening to someone on the other side of the planet, and choosing to hear yourself at last.
