Pharrell Gets Lucky With a Knighthood, Thanks to Napoleon’s Legacy

On the eve of Bastille Day, as France worked itself into a lather about liberty, equality, and fraternity, the country was doffing its imaginary hat to a man who’s carried creative revolution through the cultural decades. On July 13, 2025, music magnate, style pioneer, and all-out creative force Pharrell Williams is made a Knight of the Legion of Honor.

And though Pharrell may not be swapping out his signature wide-brim hat for a sword and shield just yet, it’s about as royal as it gets in France. Founded by no less a figure than Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, it remains France’s highest civilian honor, awarded to individuals, French or not, who have made a unique contribution to the nation.

As it happens, Pharrell’s fingerprints are all over contemporary French culture. His creative partnership with France has long extended beyond music, spanning fashion, fragrance, and even a bit of fine dining. He’s worked on everything from the legendary Millionaire sunglasses that he co-designed with Louis Vuitton in 2005, to serving now as the Men’s Creative Director at the fashion house; in short, Pharrell’s so embedded in French haute couture it’s ridiculous!

Pharrell’s name is now permanently joined to France in the music books, all thanks to his earlier collaboration with electronic gods Daft Punk for the worldwide smash “Get Lucky”. That single wouldn’t just go to No. 1, it would become a genre-blending moment that epitomized the union of American soul and French synth. Recently, the man has spent more time in Paris, working on the new Clipse album, Let God Sort Em Out, which was released July 11. Notably, the album was recorded at Louis Vuitton’s Paris HQ and has already been praised to the high heavens.

The announcement of his knighthood was made by the French government only one day ahead of Bastille Day, as if to suggest that they would remember not only their revolutionary past, but the revolutionaries of modern art and culture. It’s a poetic nod: from storming the Bastille to storming the charts, France knows a cultural insurgent when it sees one.

This new accolade is one more gem Pharrell can add to his already blinged-out crown. But behind the fame, the streams, the fashion week headlines, it’s his real connection to France, his deep creative relationships and friendships, his respect for its culture, and his knack for bringing global influence and French fineness together that secured the deal.

So here’s to Pharrell Williams: Knight of the Legion of Honor, master of the hook, king of cool. Napoleon somewhere would be proud, unless he was bouncing around to “Get Lucky.”
