Sha'Carri Richardson's Boyfriend Speaks Out After Airport Incident

And in the fast world of elite athletics, it sometimes boils over. A similar situation allegedly occurred with track star Sha'Carri Richardson in a completely different manner, however, and with her boyfriend, fellow sprinter Christian Coleman, at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport the other day. But behind the headlines and beyond the handcuffs, Coleman is working to show the world something more: "Sha'Carri Richardson is a great person," said Coleman.

The smackdown happened a month ago at a TSA checkpoint, when cops say Richardson got into an argument with Coleman. And the disagreement quickly escalated. Richardson, authorities said, is also accused of yanking Coleman's backpack and placing himself in front of him as a deterrent before shoving Coleman into a pillar, after which he allegedly threw headphones at him. It was reportedly confirmed by surveillance footage, and Richardson was arrested on Sunday night and booked into the South Correctional Entity jail in Des Moines, Washington. They let her go the next day.

But here is the twist: Coleman declined to press charges, but he didn't even want police to think of him as a victim, he said. Nine months later, Coleman has quieted down and had a chat with CITIUS MAG about the whole thing and his friend.

It was a challenging situation all around. But I also don't believe she should have been arrested," he said. "People have discussions and emotions. Of course, she has things to practice on for herself. So do I, so do you. Everybody." Coleman doesn't want the spin to be a negative one, either.

"I also hate the narrative, it's too negative," he continued. "She is a normal human person and so amazing.

Coleman's answer may be surprising to some, considering that those waiting for the drama are probably what they have expected, but it's also sincerely honest. He speaks almost empathetically… seeing beyond the struggle of Sha'Carri James and the humanity behind it.

Sha and I are two alpha males, and she is the best female athlete in the whole world. She has a lot of layers, and they are not only things, so I can't understand them, but no one can. She's one of one. And I'm one of one, too."

We rarely hear examples of this kind of grace during public incidents, especially when the participants are otherwise drawn in by fame and competition. At the end of the day, though, it's not about blaming Coleman but about showing progress.

"Man, she gon' be alright; I'mma be straight too," he replied. "So it is what it is."

All of us are sent for a ride by life sometimes, even the best runners in the world. But as Coleman puts it, this is about a moment or just one mistake. It's not about the Weed, it's about the Man, and, even in Jesus' eyes, Sha'Carri is still golden.
